Tony Milne – Biography Summary.
Tony Milne has held senior positions in the New Zealand Labour Party including
being on Labour’s governing board (NZ Council) and victorious campaign team for the 2005 General
Election. By age 26 he had stood twice for Parliament as a candidate for the Labour Party
in the Rakaia Electorate achieving the best results for Labour in that area for over 20 years.
Tony earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Canterbury University in 2003 double majoring
in English and Political Science and went on to earn a first class honours degree in Political
Science in 2004.
Tony worked in Parliament for three years and helped co-ordinate a major New Zealand-wide
campaign for the controversial Civil Union legislation
which passed in 2004. He currently works with key community groups in Christchurch on behalf of
the Canterbury Labour MPs, four of whom are Ministers in the New Zealand Government.
Tony recently became New Zealand’s youngest Justice of the Peace (JP)
and is a member of and holds governance positions on several community and voluntary sector organisations.
From 2001-2004, after completing an assistance certificate in youth work, Tony worked part-time
as a youth worker at the 198 Youth Health Centre providing peer support, sexual health promotion
and education and doing pregnancy tests.
Tony comes from the deep south of New Zealand- he was born in Invercargill in 1981. He moved
to Christchurch in 2000 to realise his dream of attending University, being the first member
of his extended family to seek higher education. Tony lives with Nic, his Civil Union Partner,
in Riccarton, Christchurch. His interests include sport, reading, movies, singing, playing
the guitar, gardening and spending time with his family.
